There are three major good sides about living in Rio, and today I´m gonna talk about the first one: being close to nature. Rio de Janeiro is a city between the sea and the mountains, and I really mean it, cause in most cases there´s less than 2Km between beaches and its nearest mountain (in some cases moutains are coaster, breaking trought the water). Most of Rio´s regions have grown in valleys, such as, for example, the block where I live (Botafogo), between a 7km lenght moutain that begins in Sugar Loaf and ends at the Rodrigo de Freita´s lake; and at the other side part of the complex mountain chain of Tijuca Florest, the biggest urban green area in the world, with more than 120 square kilometers.

When you live in Rio you have in the day by day like some leisure options that are just utopic dreams for other metropolis people. Beyond Rio´s famous beaches, carioca people can enjoy light walks or even trekking journeys at the forest (sometimes little parks, sometimes big protection areas with wild vegetation), and dreamy escapes like waterfalls at just 30 min walking from high traffic avenues.

And even if you want big deal, at just 50 min by car from Rio´s downtown you´ll find one of the entrance gates of the Serra dos Orgãos National Park, a huge wild atlantic forest paradise, with lakes, wild animals and a bunch of little and medium waterfalls. The intellectual love brotherhood

Los Hermanos, from Rio de Janeiro, is nowadays one of the most popular brazilian rock bands. They´ve spent something like 4 years in Rio´s underground indie rock scene, working hard and doing very good music; then one day have suddenly reached the national charts, due the most radiophonic pop song from their first album. Los Hermanos then became the rock group that - despite all industry´s mousetraps - has got to keep their music ideals untouched, developing the original concept of the first album in the next two ones. They also became a cultural phenomena, with a massive legion of fans who are so fans, but so fans, that sometimes looks like a sect. At Los Hermanos concert, the vocalist doesn´t sing: is the crowd who sings every song, every word, looking each other with abetter smiles and tears in the eyes. The fan basis is very active in the net, trought online forums and fotologs; and the major fan communities identifies theirselves in concerts using coded color bracelets, wich makes possible to differentiate real fans from the masses.

Los Hermanos is formed by 4 nice guys, sons of the intellectual/financial Rio de Janeiro´s elite. Despite the golden cradow and the playboy way of living; the four have always been low profile, both in dressing and in attitude. So is their Rio fan basis: midlle and high class youth, who belive they´ve achieved a new state of understanding of life, love, things and existence - misunderstood spirits of light in this materialist and violent world.

Today I did listen their 4th album, called 4, the transition between the rock past and the brave new brazilian popular music oriented path they´re trying. Lyrics are ultra romantic, all of them talk about love. The vocal isn´t always boring like band haters like to say: sometimes his blasé suffering matches very well the very good instrumental; and talking about brazilian popular music, their lyrics - altought the brazilian music clichés and archetypes - are much better than what old (yet) “gods” like Caetano Veloso or Gilberto Gil are doing nowadays. Los Hermanos are an island of intellectual love in this materialist and violent world wich is Rio´s South Zone.

Daft Punk in Rio costs U$70

There will be a Daft Punk concert here in Rio, at Tim Festival, a music festival sponsored by Telecom Italia Mobile (wich operates in Brazil with a nice market share) wich once a year brings cool names to the tropics. Finally the robot duo will be in town, but they´re asking R$150 for the ticket, wich means something around U$70 or EU$50…
For a cultural event made with public money (the big companys can pick part of their taxes to use them in marketing actions, since they´re “cultural oriented”) I think it´s unbelieveble. Specially considering that our salaries are in reais, not in dollars.

Election time again

In a few days we gonna have the first election day (two fases, in wich the two most voted candidats go to the 101). There´s an ocean of candidates, a half of them with dumb or nonsense political nicknames (it´s common here), and there´s nobody to vote for.
Of course seventy percent of the Rio´s population - and probably the whole country´s - already know who to vote for, a huge mass of politically alienated people, who chooses their candidates by the most stupid reasons (such as beauty, promisses of privileges, possibility of getting involved in some corruption and getting profit from it, etc).
But for the population part who can effective read, and for those people who have read the newspapers (at least the frontpages), these days are days for doubts, dilemas and no hope.
It´s the first election after Lula´s government: for two decades he was the left sided candidat who (one day) could save the country; in 2002 he´s finnaly arrived at the capital and was the leader of one of the worst political freak shows Brazil´s ever seen. For the world´s surprise (but not our) it seems that there will be context for his reelection, so there´s no perspective for this country in short-middle term. It´s a pitty and a shame.
(sorry about my bad english, it could be even worst…).. :-)

Onde estão os outdoors presidenciais?

A propaganda política está nas ruas. Brasileirices como painéis segurados por cavaletes humanos, bonecões de Olinda com rodinhas empurrados em procissão na orla, quarteto feminino vestindo fantasia com o número do candidato a deputado, panfletos aos milhares, carros de som espezinhando nossa paciência - bancados por candidatos a deputados e a senador que acreditam que vão conseguir convencer alguém na base da rima pobre cantada em ritmo de samba.
Só não tenho visto propaganda presidencial. Cadê os outdoors do Lula? E os do Geraaaaaaldo? Nem mesmo um poster vermelhinho da Tia Heloísa vi por aí. Será um fenômeno local? Será só aqui no Rio? Ou no Brasil inteiro a propaganda presindencial de rua este ano está deveras comedida?

Por falar em FLÚOR, é aí que mora o perigo!

Trilhos noturnos

Da dobra da baía vemos tudo.
Água morna que faz flutuar os barcos e todo o resto.
O luar que vem da Praia do Flamengo ilumina a poça d´água:
luz branca que vibra à velocidade somada de todos os corações.
Calma com cheiro de maresia,
os pescadores tentando catar os únicos corpos que se movem…
Lixo comestível.
O silêncio é rasgado pelas ventas do 512, que faz curva rente e quase toca o pneu na calçada alta de pedra. Segue como um trem louco, até debaixo do antigo cassino…
As baratas se divertem, dão risada.
Baratas tontas. Preocupadas com a festa nos bueiros, ignoram a própria sorte.
Quem está sempre com fome procura apenas comida, não há contexto para nada além.
Ri melhor quem as esmaga com a sola dos sapatos; mesmo que elas continuem presentes, agora entranhadas na sola do Adidas.
A música vem de tempos em tempos, som forte e agudo; começa baixinho, chega perto, passa de repente.
Se fosse há vinte anos, viria de um Chevette com rádio barato; agora vem dos Samsungs e Motorolas, com seus toques em mp3.
O otimismo me diz que são menos irritantes do que o onipresente toque padrão dos Nokia.
A farra é rasgada pelo motor a diesel do Metrô de Superfície, que faz curva rente e quase toca o pneu na calçada alta de pedra. Vai deslizando fora dos trilhos como um trem louco, até debaixo do antigo cassino…
As baratas deram no pé, as conversas e os toques em mp3 se abafaram por alguns instantes, o peixe desistiu de morder a isca, a cerveja rendeu seu último gole.
Ao longe, repentinos fogos de artifício nos rumos do Dona Marta marcam o clímax do passeio, explosões e cores reverberando no mar e nas montanhas.
Missão cumprida, já não somos mais os mesmos.
Pegamos as bicicletas e voltamos, nos trilhos do metrô, até a estação de nossa casa.

4 - De carro na Lapa, às 23h15 de uma sexta-feira.

5 - Em Ipanema, sendo carregado pela multidão suada no Simpatia é Quase Amor, bebendo caipirinha contaminada.
